D'Roy Taylor is the leader of the Taylor clan, a relic hunting historian, and as tough a man as ever lived in the Honey Island swamp that borders Louisiana and Mississippi (one of many tales about D'Roy's legendary toughness is how he plucked out all his own teeth, with nothing but a sharpened stick and a bottle of whiskey to assist him, because he had a toothache and didn't cotton to the idea of spending money all his life on dentists). D'Roy was born on the Mississippi Swamps and knows them better than virtually anyone else in the area; he's also appointed himself the keeper of legends and lore from the area that come with the life he's led there. D'Roy is a Vietnam veteran and a bricklayer by trade, but relic hunting is his passion. D'Roy continually schools all his sons and nephews in the ways of the swamp, including how to develop one's 'swamp eye': a way of looking through the swamp, not just at it. He also famously cannot tolerate rudeness in a man and prides himself on having raised all the boys in his family to be gentlemen.
