The Real Hustle
- 1. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- 2. When in public, keep your valuables safe. Put phones and wallets in sealed inside pockets or closeable bags. Don't carry your purse or backpack loosely over one shoulder. Only carry as much cash as you actually need.
- 3. Always check your statements from financial institutions. Contact your bank right away if you notice any unusual transactions. Stop hustlers from emptying your account.
- 4. When approached by people who claim to be in a position of authority (police, FBI agents), don't be afraid to ask for ID. If they really are who they say, they'll be happy to oblige.
- 5. If someone calls claiming to be from your bank, don't give him any of your personal details. If he is legitimate, he'll have no problem with you phoning the bank yourself.
- 6. Before putting them in the trash, shred all documents containing personal information.
- 7. When doing business with strangers, never give them cash, even if they provide you with a receipt. They can be long gone before you realize there's a problem.
- 8. When in public places, always keep your valuables in your line of sight. It only takes a second for a hustler to grab your bag.
- 9. Don't hide your valuables or keys in the mailbox and window sill. A thief can scoop up your keys and be off in a flash.
- 10. Be careful. Even though most people are honest and law abiding, there are hustlers out there ready and waiting to take what's yours. Stay aware of what's going on around you!
