Talking to the Pilots of Maui Chopper

Q: How did you get started flying helicopters?

A: About 15 years ago, I was hanging out in Maui and waiting tables. I went on a helicopter flight, as a passenger, and thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever done in my life. I decided right there I wanted to be a pilot. It was like a light bulb went on over my head.

Q: Describe your most memorable rescue.

A: It would have to be the naked rescue. A couple of years ago, 32, maybe 33 people got caught in a flash flood. It was late in the afternoon, near darkness, pouring rain. At first we get a call that three people needed rescue. Then it was eight, then fifteen. Then we heard it was thirty and then as many as sixty.

It turned out a bunch of young ladies, between 19 and 23-years-old, were at an outdoor yoga class and went skinny dipping. Then the flash flood came and the water apparently rose 10 feet in one minute. While we were on the rescue, I was looking down from the helicopter and said to the rescue captain sitting next to me, "I think they're naked. What are they doing here?"

It's a good story because everyone ended up OK. To my knowledge, it's one of the biggest rescues in the state of Hawaii.

Q: What is the best part of the job?

A: It's great to work with the guys from the fire department. It makes you feel good to rescue someone, to be the difference between someone surviving and not surviving.
