Despite being being known as the Stocking Strangler, Carlton Gary
did not simply strangle his victims. Between 1977 and 1978, Gary beat and sexually assaulted as many as seven elderly women in Columbus, GA., sometimes strangling them into unconsciousness first. His victims were white women who lived alone, and ranged in age from 55 to 89. In 1986, Gary was convicted of three murders and sentenced to death. He remains on Georgia's death row after his scheduled December 16, 2009, execution was stayed.
