February 27: Chardon High School Shooting
Social outcast Thomas "T.J." Lane, 17, a student at the Lake Academy Alternative School for at risk youth, reportedly
entered the cafeteria at the Chardon High School, in Chardon, Ohio, around 7:30 a.m. and opened fire on a table of five or six boys, killing two and wounding the other three. He later turned himself in to police. Lane is charged with three counts of aggravated murder, two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault. In May he was found competent to stand trial as a juvenile. On June 8 he pleaded not guilty
to the charges against him. His attorney told the court that Lane would ultimately plead not guilty by reason of insanity. His bond was set $1 million cash or surety despite prosecutors' requesting $2.5 million cash.
