The state Department of Corrections has announced that it is investigating Pennsylvania's SCI Fayette after receiving an anonymous letter from someone claiming to be a corrections officer, accusing corrections officers at the maximum security prison of organizing and betting on fights between prisoners, and at least one fight between a guard and a prisoner. According to the letter, the winning inmate is allowed to run a store at the prison. The writer of the letter claims to be in fear for his own life, and the lives and safety of inmates who fight and suffer "missing teeth, swollen eyes, broken knuckles [and] broken hands." These accusations come hard on the heels of arrests made at SCI Pittsburgh involving sexual assault and abuse of inmates. In response to media inquiries, representatives for the state Department of Corrections announced that the allegations are being taken very seriously and that a full investigation is underway.
