Oct. 2, 6:04 p.m.
James Martin, 55, of Silver Spring, Md., was crossing a grocery store parking lot in Wheaton, Md., when he was killed by a single shot from a high-power assault or hunting rifle. Martin, a program analyst, had been buying groceries for elementary school kids he mentored. His death was the first in a killing spree that would leave five dead by morning. Earlier that evening, at 5:20 p.m., windows were shot at a craft store nearby in Montgomery County, but no one was hurt.
