Amanda Brumfield
Amanda Brumfield
Amanda Brumfield, 29, who was convicted of manslaughter in June 2011, was sentenced on October 7 to 20 years in prison for the aggravated manslaughter of her best friend's child, Olivia Garcia, 1, who died under her care in October 2008 in Ocoee, Fla. Brumfield, estranged daughter of bad-boy actor Billy Bob Thornton, was originally indicted in June 2009 on charges of first-degree murder, child abuse and aggravated manslaughter.

Brumfield claimed she was babysitting Garcia when the child fell out of her playpen (about two feet). She said the girl was fine and so didn't seek medical help and instead fed her some banana. The autopsy report showed that the victim had suffered a brain injury and a fractured skull — injuries that the medical examiner ruled could not have been caused by a fall. Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. Jane Garavaglia testified that the death of Olivia Garcia was intentional and the child died of blunt force trauma to the head. Police testified that Brumfield intentionally waited more than two hours before seeking medical attention for the child, by which time paramedics were unable to revive her. Brumfield is Thornton's oldest daughter with first wife Melissa Lee Gatlin.
