Back at the Olsen house on January 10, 2005, shortly after the Massachusetts State Police uncovered a bloody metal pipe outside Neil's barn, the investigation, centered at first on Hannah the alleged murderous horse, took a dramatic turn.
As investigators continued working the scene, Patricia was still inside the house wandering around, still distraught over her husband's untimely death.
"It was a really bad nightmare," Patricia later said in court.
While investigators were outside compiling evidence, talking over the situation, undoubtedly preparing to re-enter the house and question Patricia in a more pointed way, Christopher called. Since being kicked out of the house by Neil, Christopher had lived at various locations—including in his car and wherever else he could find a place to crash. He had even spent some time with Amanda, who now lived with a boyfriend and his father in New York. Patricia, some of her employees later told police, at times had even allowed Christopher to sleep at the restaurant, without telling Neil. But over the past few days, Christopher, with no job and certainly no money, had been living at a nearby motel.
"I want to come over and visit," Christopher reportedly told his mother. Patricia understood he knew what had happened and was offering to be there for her. But, at the same rate, "He just didn't sound sympathetic," she later told police.
So she told him no. He wasn't welcome.
