A few weeks into the investigation, it was reported that the Ewells had been mutilated and sexually molested.

Untrue, said the sheriff's department.

Relatives of the Ewells had put up a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a killer or killers. In June, Dana added another $25,000 to the original reward, making it an even $50,000. Dana claimed he wanted something done about the murders of his family.

It had gone on too long.

Someone. Somewhere. Knew something.

Dana was sure of it.

The cops should stop focusing on him, he said through his lawyer, and concentrate on finding the true killers.

But then, that was exactly what investigators were doing.
