Naked and Shivering

Graham and Lamoureux stripped their coats off so they could fit into a small crawlspace and have a look underneath the house. "Hey," Graham said, his chest to the ground, "what are you doing?" He could barely see Deojay. Yet, shining a flashlight underneath the house one thing became clear: Deojay hadn't even slipped on any clothes when he took off. "He was bare-ass naked," Graham said with a bit of a chuckle in his voice. He was naked and shivering.

Even so, Deojay wouldn't respond.

Then a thought occurred to both detectives: Why is this clown hiding if he didn't do anything? "Talk about a guilty conscience," Graham said later.

"Scott, we just want to talk to you." Graham thought deeper about the situation and, being well over six-feet, decided he wasn't going in to fetch him.

Graham and Lamoureux were in a terrible position. They had a woman who was still missing. With any luck, she was still alive. They needed any information Deojay could provide. The other side of it was, did Deojay have a weapon? What was he planning to do? So, Graham told me, he and Lamoureux, who was the smaller of the two troopers, decided Lamoureux would go in after him.

When that didn't work, they decided to flush Deojay out with pepper spray. "We call it 'cap stun,'" Graham said.

What helped was that Deojay's girlfriend was standing right there during the entire ordeal. In effect, she was a witness. They were still on "touchy ground," Graham recalled. "They weren't there to arrest Deojay; just question him."

"What's going on, Scott?" Graham asked. "Why didn't you come out? Why'd you run?" Deojay was rubbing his eyes. Brushing himself off.

Deojay mumbled something about always "fleeing" from the cops. It was a just habit, he seemed to say. He was scared. What did they want, anyway?

"Get him some clothes," Graham told Deojay's girlfriend.
