Prosecutors were sure that Morgan Mengel was just as guilty as her lover, Stephen Shappell, for the murder of her husband. Shappell had already been convicted, but in Mengel’s case the judge declared a mistrial. Prosecutors, however, found evidence so damaging to Mengel’s defense that she could only plead guilty to all charges.
