On July 25, 1841,Mary Rogers, the well-known “beautiful cigar girl” at a Manhattan tobacconist’s frequented by authors and newspapermen, disappeared, sparking an unprecedented media frenzy. The enduring mystery of her murder inspired a short story by customer Edgar Allan Poe.
