On March 25, 1987, police entered the dingy Philadelphia basement where Gary Heidnik had kept and tortured women he’d kidnapped off the street. Two women, chained to a pipe, were asleep under a dirty blanket. When police woke them, they screamed in terror until they were reassured that help had finally arrived.
