On July 11, 2000, Dr. Swango pleaded guilty to killing three of his patients, and to fraud charges, but is suspected in as many as 60 murders of patients and co-workers. Nick named “Double-0 Swango” by his colleagues for the fact that so many patients that he came into contact with died soon after. Swango was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
On June 29, 2010, Jayant Patel, implicated in as many as 17 patient deaths, was found guilty in four and sentenced to a mere 7 years in prison.
Dr. Jayant Patel’s medical competence has been a subject of debate both in the U.S. and Australia for the last 25 years. Convicted in 2010 on three counts of manslaughter for three patient deaths, Patel surprised the world by winning a retrial and being exonerated on one of the manslaughter charges.
