On This Day in Crime History: Clarence Gideon is Arrested

On June 3, 1961, a robbery at a Fla. pool hall resulted in the arrest of small-time criminal Clarence Gideon, who was too poor to afford a lawyer. Forced to represent himself, Gideon received the maximum sentence, which gave him plenty of time to study America’s laws, and file a criminal case that affected our entire legal system and caused the release of thousands of convicts.
