What a relief. Police in Kansas city say that the set of eyeballs found at a Conoco gas station earlier this week didn’t come out of a human face.
An employee emptying the gas station’s outdoor garbage can found a foam cooler perched on top of the bin. She bravely opened the box, and to her horror, found two eyeballs inside.
Surveillance footage from the gas station shows that two men pulled up Wednesday night, pumped gas and left the creepy cooler behind. The cooler, reports the Kansas City Star, didn’t bear any identifying information, only a notice to keep the eyeballs refrigerated.
Police called around to local hospitals and eye banks, but no one was missing any eyeballs. The Jackson County medical examiner’s office determined that the eyes were not human, and most likely came out of a pig. Pig eyes are often used for training purposes in medical classrooms, because, contrary to the cooler’s warning, they don’t need refrigeration.
While it’s certainly reassuring to know that the mysterious eyeballs weren’t the result of assault, murder or torture, the question of why someone would casually leave a pair of pig peepers at a gas station still remains.
