Tempting as it can be, you should never drug children, no matter how unruly they’re being. That goes double if they’re someone else’s children, attending a daycare called Kiddie Academy, a name that suggests there’s some higher learning going on behind its doors.
Prosecutors say a 59-year-old caretaker named Deborah Gratz has marred Kiddie Academy’s fine name by slipping the over-the-counter sleeping aid “Sominex” into the cups of several children right before nap time. A co-worker who reportedly spotted Gratz in action turned her in, and the 6-year daycare veteran was arrested and fired. That day, the kids didn’t ingest any Sominex, but authorities don’t know if Gratz was a habitual sippy cup spiker.
Gratz, of Hollister, Ca., is charged with five counts of attempted child endangerment and five counts of assault due to the potential harm to the children. She faces 2 1/2 years in prison per count.
Currently free, Gratz is due in South County, Ca., court on Tuesday, March 26.
