An Arizona couple on the run from cops would probably have been better off going to the precinct calmly and hoping for the best. Instead, police say Christopher Psomas, 38, and Ashley Strahan, 20, chose the hard way. When cops arrived at a Mesa business that had reported a woman trying to pass bad checks, Psomas and Strahan allegedly jumped into their vehicle and took cops on a chase through the desert.
When their car was disabled at the Salt River Reservation, the couple fled on foot and ended up rolling through a patch of cholla cactus. Cholla cactus, if you’re not an acanthochronologist, is the kind with millions of thin, sharp little spines. The individual spines are themselves covered in barbs, which makes them incredibly painful to remove. Once taken to Banner Desert Medical Center, a needle-studded Psomas lamented from his hospital bed: ”I am so stupid. This is what I get for trying to run from the police.”
Psomas was booked on suspicion of felony flight; Strahan wasn’t charged.
