Maricopa County Arizona woman Victoria Soliz, 30, has been arrested after a neighbor reported seeing her in his front yard holding her son’s face down in a puddle.
According to police the neighbor reported hearing screams around 12:30 in the afternoon on March 8, 2013, and went to investigate. He saw, Soliz on her knees, “pushing a toddler’s face into a puddle as if trying to drown him.” When attempts to stop her were unsuccessful, the neighbor called 911. While on the phone the neighbor watched as Soliz moved the boy, 3, to a larger puddle in which she held his face, before appearing to give him CPR.
Police arrived and took both mother and son to a local hospital. Thankfully, the child was uninjured. Once there Soliz reportedly told police that “Jesus” told her to drown her son, adding that that he had “become stuck to the ground” from “some kind of electrical shock.” The deputy who took her statement described it as “strange and incomprehensible.”
Authorities got a better picture of what happened after Soliz told doctors that she had been self-medicating her schizophrenia with crystal meth.
It is unclear if she was a diagnosed schizophrenic, or if this was a possibly meth-induced self-diagnosis, but in either case the use of methamphetamine for medicinal purposes is at best ill-advised.
Soliz faces charges of felony child abuse.
