Woman Sent to Prison for Raping Own Son

In a Luzerne County, Pa., courtroom, a 14-year-old boy described how the first time he was forced to have sex with his mother, it was on his eighth birthday. His father, Robert Caravella, who had been showing him porn for a while, brought him upstairs and made him perform intercourse on his mother, Carol Hann. That incident would be the first of many in this perverse domestic saga that draws to a close with both parents heading for prison.

Convicted in December of rape of a child, criminal conspiracy, incest, corruption of minors and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, 45-year-old Hann was sentenced Monday to up to 41.5 years in prison. Caravella, convicted of conspiracy to commit rape of a child, corruption of minors, endangering the welfare of children and distributing explicit sexual material to minors and is due to be sentenced next week.

At trial, the teenager also testified about the conditions in which he and his parents lived. He bathed about once a month, he said, and lived in a flea-infested, trash-filled home. The teen attributed his poor hygiene and habit of walking around the house naked to his parents’ never having taught him differently. ”I got used to it,” he said at a preliminary hearing last year.

According to the testimony of former Luzerne County Children and Youth Service case worker Kelly Flaherty, Hann and Caravella took the boy out of school and enrolled him in an online school to shield him from the outside world. They also stopped him from having friends and rarely allowed him to leave their filth-ridden home.
