This news item was missed by many, overshadowed by coverage of the the Sandy Hook school massacre, which occurred the same day, December 14, 2012. On that day in China’s Chenpeng village in Guangshan county in the central province of Henan, Min Yongjun, “strongly psychologically affected by rumors of the upcoming end of the world,” in connection with Dec. 21, 2012, of the Mayan calendar, freaked out and stabbed an old woman who was spouting end-of-the-world predictions. He then went to the local elementary school in where he attacked and stabbed the children as shown in the surveillance footage. In all 22 children were injured and no one was killed.
Mr. Min, who had been diagnosed with mere epilepsy, was later quoted by China’s Global News as saying, “I learned from the media two years ago that killing children would get me on TV.” He was referring to another knife-wielding madman who attacked and nine people in China in 2010, seven of them children.
