In January 2007, Knoxville coupleĀ Channon Christian, 21, and Chris Newsom, 23, were carjacked and brought to a house where they were beaten and sodomized. Chris was shot in the back several times and his body was set on fire. Channon endured more abuse. In an attempt to destroy DNA evidence, the assailants poured bleach down her throat, then stuffed her into garbage backs and tossed her body in a waste container, where she suffocated to death.
Four people–George Thomas, Vanessa Coleman, Lemaricus Davidson and Letalvis Cobbins–were charged with kidnapping, assaulting and killing the couple. Thomas and Cobbins were sentenced to life without parole, Davidson was sentenced to death, and Coleman was sentenced to 53 years. A fifth person, Eric Boyd, was sentenced to 18 years for accessory to carjacking.
