A couple who punished a 12-year-old girl in a cruel and bizarre way have been sentenced to jail. Darnell Landrum, 34, was sentenced to 120 days in jail after pleading guilty to malicious punishment of a child. The girl’s mother, Stephanie Broten, 38, pleaded guilty to the same charge and was sentenced to 90 days in November. The two were accused of shaving the child’s head and forcing her to run around outside wearing a diaper. They said she was being punished for bad grades. Landrum had previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic assault for hitting the girl with a belt. He is ordered to have no contact with the girl.
The Fridley, MN, couple were arrested in May after concerned neighbors called the cops, reporting a 12-year-old girl running up and down the street wearing only a diaper and a tank top. When police arrived, the girl was crying hysterically and begging to be allowed inside. A crowd of about 50 people had gathered to watch. The child, whose head had been completely shaved, had reportedly been forced to perform what her parents referred to as “diaper duty,” which Fridley Police Lt. Mike Monsrud says meant she had to pick up trash outside while wearing the humiliating garment. According to a criminal complaint, this incident was the third time the girl has been punished with “diaper duty.” Broten and Landrum were both arrested, but did not appear to understand why police were involved in their parenting practices. According to Monsrud, Broten and Ladrum were laughing the whole way to the police station. They were booked into Anoka county jail, where they were held until their first court appearance. Both were charged with malicious punishment of a child and released on bail. The girl, and three other children found in the home, were placed in foster care.
