Investigators have a suspect, Freddie Grant, in custody in connection with the Gabrielle Swainson missing child case. Police were systematically going down the list of family and close family friends to eliminate as suspects, when they came to Freddie Grant, 52, a man in a relationship with Gabrielle’s mother, who was helping with the search. Grant is a handyman and landscaper from Elgin, S.C., who mowed the Swainson’s lawn the day before Gabrielle’s disappearance, and had a key to the home. He was uncooperative. Investigators soon discovered that he had a prior conviction for cocaine possession with intent to distribute, and that he is a person of interest in two unsolved cases from 2011: Adrianna Diane Laster, 28, of Homestead, Fla., who disappeared while living with Grant, and Daniel Lee Wood, 36, who was shot and killed while standing around a fire in a front yard in Lugoff, S.C., not too far from Elgin.
A warrant executed on Grant’s home August 21 turned up used duct tape with Gabrielle’s blood and hair on it. Broadening the search to the rest of the neighborhood, police found more of her blood and hair in a junked car in a junkyard near Grant’s house. The convicted felon was arrested on a weapons charge after police found 12-gauge shotgun shells and .38-caliber hollow-point bullets in his home. They have since charged Grant with kidnapping too, and have obtained a warrant to collect his DNA. Grant is being held without bond at the Lexington County Detention Center, and, according to the Sherriff’s office is being “completely uncooperative.” Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott told reporters, “He holds the key. He’s the one who can stop those tears from Gabrielle’s mother and stop the pain her in heart.” Authorities are asking anyone who hired Grant to contact them.
