The same day Canadian authorities announce that they have identified the human head found in Angrignon Park, Montreal, as that of missing Chinese student, Jun Lin, who was sexually assaulted and dismembered (not necessarily in that order) on video by Luka Magnotta, officials in Jackson County, Mo., have announced that they have found another human body part along the Little Blue Trace Trail near Independence.
Unlike the Magnotta case, these extremities are not showing up in the mail at the offices of congressional conservatives, but are being found in a rural recreational area. Fisherman reportedly spotted a man’s size 13 black leather Nike shoe (pictured) Tuesday with a human foot in it, and retrieved it for deputies. There were also two socks in the shoe.
Kayakers found a decomposed human hand and forearm on June 25, also in the Little Blue River, about a mile from where the foot was found. The remains were probably there for some time, and were only discovered because the river is low from lack of rain. Investigators believe that there was still enough tissue on the bones to use for DNA testing. The results will be compared to information on known missing persons to try to find a match.
According to Sgt. Ronda Montgomery, spokeswoman for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, intensive searching yielded “some items of interest” in the vicinity, “However, it will take some time to determine if they are related to this case or not.”
The foot was shipped to the crime lab in Kansas City for autopsy. The hand was instead sent to the University of Texas for autopsy. Investigators are not saying if the two incidents are connected.
Jackson County Sherriff Michael Sharp told reporters, “These obviously are the remains of someone. They have a family somewhere. And we are going to do everything we can to recover the rest of the body parts if they are out there.” He asks anyone with a missing friend or relative to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
