An unidentified man dressed in an Elmo costume, who some reports are calling “Anti-Semitic Elmo,” was removed from the vicinity of New York’s Central Park Zoo on June 24, 2012, by police after posing for photos with tourists, screaming curses at them and, in general, ranting about a Jewish conspiracy. He complained about the “Jewish cops,” “the Jewish costume company” and of harassment by Jews of business owners, among other less intelligible things. Mostly he upset people, many of whom have positive childhood memories of the lovable red Sesame Street character, but most importantly he really freaked out parents with kids. One woman remarked, “That is the scariest Elmo I’ve ever seen in my life. Oh my God.”
Police say that though the man, who was reportedly middle aged, was cuffed when he was whisked away in an ambulance, he was not arrested.
