The Self-Made Millionaire Lives At Home
If Breivik is to be believed, he spent the first decade of his adult life starting up and selling successful companies, making and losing the equivalent of close to half a million U.S. dollars, and holding high-powered executive positions with major companies. He also claimed to hold the equivalent of two Bachelors degrees and a Masters degree based on “informal studies,” although his formal education ended after receiving his high school diploma.
According to his résumé, his longest stints as an employee never lasted more than two years. His first attempt to make his way in the professional world involved day trading stock at the age of 18, which he said he stopped after losing over 2 million Swedish krona ($300,000).
Breivik’s version of his employment history included working as a customer service representative for different banking and telephony firms, and as the founder and owner of the E-Commerce Group. Breivik said that his company offered software and programming services to companies and organizations around the world, including what he called the Auperes Commilitones Christi Templique Solomonici (PCCTS), as well as the Templar Knights.
Breivik claimed that he made 4 million Norwegian krona ($700,000) running the E-Commerce Group from 2002-2006, which he said had seven employees. But according to Norwegian press reports, the company went bankrupt and was forced to shut down. After that Breivik moved back in with his mother.
One of Breivik’s co-workers from a stint as a customer service representative told RT.com that he had a “big ego,” and that Breivik had problems with woman. Breivik also had trouble getting along with people of Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian descent, the former co-worker said. However, he could not have imagined that Breivik was capable of going on a mass-killing spree.
“There are far more guys who are way weirder than he was,” he said.
Besides spending much of his free time scouring the Internet and reading about what he said was the present and historical threat of Islam, Breivik was an avid gamer and devoted much of his time in the virtual universe of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft. At one point, he wrote in his manifesto that he devoted most of his waking hours for over a year playing the game while going into great detail about his online persona and fellow World of Warcraft clan members.
Breivik’s other interests included weightlifting and body sculpting (in the interests of which he took steroids for increased bulk and strength), reading, and occasionally drinking, claiming to be a connoisseur of French wines. He also liked watching Dexter, expressing an appreciation for the “series about that forensic mass murderer.”
On a personal note, Breivik said he was interested in the opposite sex, but never mentioned having a regular girlfriend at any point during his adult life. He alluded to having “one-night stands” and having once had sex with “two girls in Prague.” However, a girlfriend “would only complicate my plans and it may jeopardize my operation,” he wrote.
The Leap of Evil Faith
“In the United States, mental abnormality alone does not excuse according to any standard of legal insanity,” Stephen A. Diamond, a forensic psychologist, told TruTV.com. “That is to say, the mere fact that a defendant suffers from some severe mental disorder such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, for instance, does not, in and of itself, meet the criteria for legal insanity.”
Given Norway’s comparatively lax sentencing guidelines, Breivik will either be confined to the wards of a mental hospital (which he told reporters would be a “fate worse than death”) or will likely not serve the full 21 years that is the maximum sentence for murder in Norway. So in either case, whether he does a stint in prison or is declared “cured” in a mental hospital, Breivik will likely be free again one day.
