Gawker is one of those sites that got big and then totally changed its mission up to suck up more hits. Founder Nick Denton originally intended Gawker to focus on media gossip and daily Manhattan news. His critics (many of which were former writers and editors) claimed he was more interested in making a quick buck than any journalistic integrity. So what happened to Gawker? A combination of incidents like being hacked, getting banned from Reddit, and no longer doing the unique insider stories that made it a must-read for media people. Now it's sort of US Weekly meets Buzzfeed but does neither very well.
