10 Dumb Urban Legends
Mixing Pop Rocks and Coke can be lethal
Despite being denied by the makers of Pop Rocks and disproven by no less an authority than the bearded geniuses in the "Mythbusters," this infamous urban legend refuses to die. For years, kids believed that combining Pop Rocks and Coke could cause death by premature stomach 'splosion. The legend persisted thanks to a rumor that the kid who played "Mickey" in the Life Cereal commercial died from a Pop Rocks and Coke speedball. (Though considering that "Mickey" hates everything except Life Cereal, it's odd that he would voluntarily ingest such a disgusting combination of snack food items.)
Why it's dumb: As the Mythbusters proved, the mixture of Pop Rocks and Coke simply does not produce enough gas to cause your insides to erupt like John Hurt in "Alien." (Forget what your mom says-- Pop Rocks contain less carbon dioxide than half a can of soda.) Also, the actor who played Mikey, John Gilchrist, is alive and well and working as an attorney. Though, ironically, if you combine Pop Rocks and Life Cereal, your face will melt off from sheer deliciousness.
