The Cardiac Kids win the National Title (1983)
It's a famous video clip: North Carolina State head coach Jim Valvano running around, looking for someone to hug after his Wolfpack won the title. But it's the actual play that sometimes gets overshadowed. Derrick Whittenburg almost loses the ball as the clock winds down, he heaves up a long desperation three-pointer that airballs, but, somehow, miraculously lands in the hands of an airborne Lorenzo Charles under the basket, who gently dunks it in and gives North Carolina State the title. Whittenburg can insist all he wants that he meant to pass it to Charles, but that was a panicked airball that turned one of the weakest dunks in history into an unforgettable moment.
