Super Bowl XXXVIII: Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

The phrase that entered popular culture on Sunday, February 1, 2004 was "wardrobe malfunction," but when Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Janet Jackson's top, exposing a breast with an odd circular piercing, it seemed to everybody who saw it that it looked pretty intentional. The repercussions were felt all across the television industry, as record fines were levied. After the incident, a female lead singer didn't take the stage at the Super Bowl halftime show for another seven years, when Fergie performed with the Black Eyed Peas.
