In October 1974, amid heavy activity by the IRA terrorist group, a pub in Guildford was blown up, resulting in the deaths of five innocent people. Two months later, three adults and one minor, collectively known as the Guildford 4, were arrested in connection with the bombings. Because of then-new anti-terrorism laws, they were held for one week, rather than the previous norm of 48 hours. Gerry Conlon, later subject of the film In The Name Of The Father, claimed that during this week in custody, he was beaten and threatened by the police into making a confession.
