Super Bowl III Was Rigged
As 18-point underdogs, the Jets beat the Colts 16-7 and helped turn the Super Bowl from a marketing gimmick into the most beloved sporting event in America. Some, however, think the whole event was fixed. Namath had opened a bar in New York's Upper East Side that allegedly became a popular hangout for the Mob, leading NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle to order Namath to close the bar. Namath refused and instead retired. A compromise was reached over the summer and Namath returned to the Jets. Questions still linger, however, as to whether Namath and his "associates" rigged Super Bowl III, though Namath has scoffed at the connection.
