The Malta Catacombs
A century ago, workers discovered thousands of skeletons — including those of many children — in a series of massive underground caves known as the Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni. The remains were said to be victims of an ancient sacrifice to "underworld gods." It is possible that these gods have not yet satisfied their taste for human flesh. In the 1940s, a group of 30 children went missing in the tunnels. The site is now under the protection of UNESCO, but access is limited to 60 people per day.
