Many historians have theorized that the accusations came from people with personal grudges against the accused, who claimed paranormal activity (possession and out of body hauntings) as evidence of a pact with the devil—a crime punishable by death. The Salem Witch Trials were one of the most famous hoaxes in American history, and cost nineteen innocent Puritans their lives.
