Feejee Mermaid: Iggy Pop
In the early 1840s, sideshow master P.T. Barnum promised the unbelievable: a mermaid for all the world to see. Promoted as a rare creature caught off the waters of Fiji, the treasure was actually half of a baby monkey attached to half a fish and covered with paper mache. Described by one reporter as "the very incarnation of ugliness," the mermaid was hardly a delight, but remained a popular sideshow artifact until it was lost in a fire.
