The Challenger Disaster
Launched in sub-freezing temperatures so President Reagan could mention it in his State of the Union speech that night, a faulty rocket seal caused the shuttle to blow up 73 seconds after take-off, killing all on board, including Christa McAuliffe, chosen to be NASA's first teacher in space.
