All Hallows Eve
Halloween isn't all druids and death. Some scholars argue that Halloween or All Hallows Eve developed as a holiday independently from the Celtic tradition of Samhain. November 1st marks the Catholic holiday of All Saints Day, when Christians are directed to pray for departed souls in order to help their transition from purgatory. Consequently, October 31st became known as All Hallows Evethe last night for souls to roam the earth. There are similarities between the Church's celebration of All Saints Day and our modern Halloween. For example, in medieval times, children would go door-to-door collecting "soul cakes."
