Carlos the Jackal
Born Illich Ramirez Sanchez but better known as "Carlos the Jackal," this Venezuelan joined the Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in 1970. Often operating as a rogue agent, Sanchez is responsible for some of the most daring terror attacks of the 1970s and 80s. In 1975, he took over the OPEC headquarters in Vienna, held 60 hostages, flew them to Algiers, and allegedly received $20 million for their release. In the 1980s, he led what appeared to be a private war against the French -- in two years he bombed four public places, killing 11 and wounding 150 more. In 1994, Sanchez was finally captured by the French in Sudan and has been serving a life sentence for terrorism ever since.
