Olmsted believes that 20th-century America was a particularly good breeding ground for conspiracy theories thanks to real Cold War conspiracies carried out by the U.S. government against the Soviet Union. She says, "Americans came to wonder: if the government is responsible for these real conspiracies, what else has it done that we don't know about yet?"
