Oscar voters often snub odds-on-favorites because of issues unrelated to the movie itself. With the snub of Kathryn Bigelow for Best Directing, it's almost certainly "because Bigelow incorporated controversial scenes of enhanced interrogation" into Zero Dark Thirty, as Fox News put it. A movie that many critics called the year's best is now a longshot for the 2013 Best Picture trophy.
