America, Russia, and the United Kingdom (and maybe other nations) have engaged in secret programs to recruit psychics for intelligence work, trying to find the locations of nuclear submarines on patrol, hostages, secret military bases, etc. The U.S. military and intelligence community had various secret projects, the best-known of which was codenamed Stargate, a formerly-classified program that dates back to the 1950s. U.S. involvement was based on the fear that the Soviets might figure out how to use ESP before America did, leading to a potential "psychic gap."
