The days when a kid could walk to the corner store and trade in a shiny nickel for a soda pop are long past in Australia. Children are not allowed to walk to a shop or school alone or even wait in the car for their guardian. If such behavior is observed by police, the guardians of the free-spirited child could be prosecuted for neglect.
