Weather Warfare: It's Real And It's Coming For You
Operation Popeye
From 1967 until 1972, Operation Popeye attempted to increase the duration of the monsoon season in Vietnam through the seeding of clouds with silver iodide. By increasing the length of the monsoon season and the amount of precipitation that fell, the Defense Department hoped to stymie the Viet Cong with landslides and mudslides and super-saturation of the soil. When the length of monsoon season increased by 30-45 days, the missions were judged a success . The operation was halted shortly after it was revealed in the Pentagon Papers and The New York Times in 1972.
