Andrew Jackson's Torrid Love Affair
Andrew Jackson fell in love (at the tender age of 22) with Rachel Robards, the wife of Colonel Lewis Robards. Andrew and Rachel eloped together, causing a great scandal. The couple had to remarry when Rachel's divorce was finalized in order to legitimize their union. For the rest of his life, Jackson fought valiantly to protect his wife's honor. Once, when a political rival mentioned Rachel in unfavorable terms, Jackson yelled, "Great God! Do you dare mention her sacred name?" A scuffle ensued and another man's ear was grazed with a bullet.
