When the News of the World phone hacking scandal broke in July 2011, it started us thinking of other heinous examples of wiretapping crimes against the unsuspecting public. While deleting voicemails of a missing teenager is a very serious accusation, governments have been doing worse for years since 1974, when illegal wiretapping entered popular culture through Watergate and the movie The Conversation.
