Called the Mad Monk of the Kremlin, Rasputin claimed to have otherworldly powers and served as an advisor to the Czarina. A group of nobles, worried about his outsized influence on the royal family, swore to kill him, a feat easier said than done. Rasputin was poisoned with cyanide, and when that failed he was shot multiple times, stabbed, mutilated, wrapped in a rug and tossed in the frigid Neva River, where he finally drowned under the ice. Unlike several 1980s-era slasher-film villains who met similar fates, he did not return two years later in a sequel. Or did he?
