John Hinckley, Jr. claimed that he shot the president in order to attract the attention of Jodie Foster, at the time a young ingénue who had just gotten her big break as an underage prostitute in the film Taxi Driver. His insanity plea worked: Hinckley has spent the past thirty years at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where he is allowed unsupervised outings and even got engaged to another inmate.
