Roscoe Arbuckle, tenderly known as "Fatty," has become a no-name in American households. In his day, his films were so successful that Paramount Pictures offered him a three-year, $3 million contract (more than $40 million today.) Arbuckle was robbed of his spotlight through a tragic combination of booze and women. During a wild party at the St. Francis Hotel, Arbuckle and friends got together with some party girls. One of them, Virginia Rappe, was a washed-up actress whose career had come to an end after she was accused of spreading crabs on a studio set, giving new weight to the term, "going out with a bang."
